چکیده

Fullerenes have been shown to intercalate between the side chains of many crystalline and semicrystalline polymers and to affect the properties of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells. Here we present the first in-depth study of intercalation in an amorphous polymer. We study blends of the widely studied amorphous polymer poly(2-methoxy-5-(30,70-dimethyloctyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MDMO-PPV) with a variety of molecules using photoluminescence measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and space-charge limited current mobility measurements. The blends with elevated hole mobilities exhibit complete photoluminescence quenching and show no phase separation in a scanning electron microscope. We conclude that intercalation occurs in MDMOPPV:fullerene blends and is responsible for the increase in theMDMO-PPV hole mobility by several orders of magnitude when it is blended with fullerenes, despite the dilution of the hole-conducting polymer with an electron acceptor.

Relationship between the Microstructure and Gas Transport Properties of Polyurethane/Polycaprolactone Blends

In this study, the relation between the permeation properties and structural characteristics of thermoplastic polyurethane based on polycaprolactone diol, TPU(PCL), and polycaprolactone (PCL) blends is investigated. for the purpsoes of this study, PU, PCL, and TPU/PCL blends containing 20 wt.% and 40 wt.% PCL were prepared via a solution blending method. The miscibility and good distribution of...

Factors Governing Intercalation of Fullerenes and Other Small Molecules Between the Side Chains of Semiconducting Polymers Used in Solar Cells

© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinh wileyonlinelibrary.com While recent reports have established signifi cant miscibility in polymer:fullerene blends used in organic solar cells, little is actually known about why polymers and fullerenes mix and how their mixing can be controlled. Here, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and molecular simulations are us...

Molecular Packing and Electronic Processes in Amorphous-like Polymer Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells with Fullerene Intercalation

The interpenetrating morphology formed by the electron donor and acceptor materials is critical for the performance of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic (PV) cells. In this work we carried out a systematic investigation on a high PV efficiency (>6%) BHJ system consisting of a newly developed 5,6-difluorobenzo[c] thiadiazole-based copolymer, PFBT-T20TT, and a fullerene der...

Open-Hole Size and Thermal Cycling Effects on Mass Loss and Surface Degradation of Polymer Matrix Composites

Degradation is a common problem for polymer matrix composites (PMCs) under low thermal cycling conditions. This paper investigates the effects of low thermal cycling on total mass loss (TML) and surface degradation of PMCs. Unnotched and open-hole specimens were weighed before and after low thermal cycling. The total mass loss and surface degradation of the specimens were studied over 250 cycle...
